Global Digital Infrastructures at Summer Opportunities Fair 2026

Aaron Fai and Nicole Starosielski at BCNM's GDI Certificate Booth

On March 4, the UC Berkeley Global Digital Infrastructures team participated in the campus’s Summer Opportunities Fair, speaking with students about the physical infrastructures that support today’s digital networks, including subsea cables and data centers.

The event offered an opportunity to introduce students to the interdisciplinary work behind global digital systems and the academic pathways available to explore them at Berkeley. Professor Nicole Starosielski joined UC Berkeley students Caroline Crowley and Martina Wu, along with BCNM Associate Director Aaron Fai, to share information about the Global Digital Infrastructures Certificate program.

The fair also welcomed Diane Sanzone, who is launching the upcoming course The Human Network. During the event, Sanzone discussed the importance of stakeholder mapping and engagement in the development and governance of digital infrastructure, highlighting how technical systems are shaped by social, political, and economic relationships.

Students visiting the GDI table had the opportunity to learn more about the certificate program and hear an early preview of plans for a forthcoming minor related to global digital infrastructures.

Through conversations with students from a wide range of disciplines, the GDI team highlighted the growing importance of understanding the systems, people, and policies that underpin the digital world.
